While some American Jews have opted to donate their funds to Combined Jewish Philanthropies, for instance, many Russian Jews support the Russian Jewish Community Foundation. Most recently, they raised more than $40,000, including matching donations from private donors, for emergency medical services in Israel.
The crisis in Israel has sparked an interesting study in community dynamics locally. The Russian Jews that Americans raised as their own have blossomed into a feisty and politically savvy mini-culture within the greater Jewish community. In fact, many Russian Jews have expressed immense pride at their ability to raise funds for Israel, independent of an umbrella Jewish organization. This commitment, they say, dismisses the stereotype of a Russian Jew who only has his hand reaching out, and does not give freely to others in need.
